I am an ADAF Wife.

We have been here at Elmendorf (JBER) for 8 years and as everyone else has stated--Alaska is a great assignment.  There are tons of things to do from camping ATVing hiking fishing hunting skiing snowboarding etc.

There is a quite large commissary and BX located on the Elmendorf side of JBER.  There is a long wait Housing however unlike the lower 48 the local housing market did not take a nose dive and there are lots of options for housing in the local commuting area.

As in any assignment it is all what you make of it.

We are going to JBER in March/April 2012 and I was wondering if any of you girls had a dog and how they are dealing with the weather? We have a French Bulldog and he's a little sensitive but there's no way I would leave him behind!

We?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢ve been up here a year and love love love Alaska. For our rank/family size, the wait list was over a year, so we went ahead and bought a house in Wasilla. It?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s about 45 minutes from the base but we?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢ve never had a problem even in the winter.

I delivered my first child up here at Providence hospital in Anchorage because he tried to come very early. They have the #2 NICU in the country and some fabulous doctors. :)

They goofed on our orders and it looks like we will be reporting to Ft Richardson 10 July. Very excited! Had done tons of research for Fort wainwright as that is what our orders said, so now with very minimal time to search we are going up blind! Again, very excited though and look forward to many adventures and meeting some new people!

Flipcam Giveaway Entry:

JBER-Joint Base Elmendorf Richardson. Alaska, USA. Air Force. The base is huge, they have plenty of lakes and cabins on base. They also have a ski slope where you can ski, snowboard and tube and there?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s an ice rink. The bx is nice, as well as the commissary. It is one of the best bases I?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢ve been to. There is wildlife on base, so you have to be cautious but it is a great experience.

Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska, US

Spouse of active duty air force

There is lots to do in Alaska. The weather has not been too bad and it does not get as dark as people said that it would.

Flipcam Give Away Entry:

It is nice post. Everything is within walking distance. There are a lot of outdoor actives: fishing, hiking, camping, biking, skiing and many more. The number one hospital in the airforce is on the installation. You see wildlife in the living areas on a daily basis. The city of Anchorage is only five minutes out the gate with a LOT of outdoor actives to do.

From the discussion boards on facebook.com/militarydutystations : ?¢‚Ǩ‚Äú?¢‚Ǩ¬ùWe have a joint commissary and Bx/Px, both bases have family readiness and other help. There are quite a bit of stuff off base right outside the gates, target, walmart, lowes, home depot, pet smart, movie theaters, best buy I could go on. The weather hasnt gotten warmer than 60 here all summer lots of rain. Very beautiful, moose wonder the bases. Its pretty cool.?¢‚Ǩ¬ù

?¢‚Ǩ‚Äú?¢‚Ǩ¬ùWe just had 32 days of straight rain and today the sun is shining. Everyone is talking about an early winter and last night the higher mountains started getting snow. Unfortunately, that means it will start early for us. I got the information from my husband who works mids on the C-17?¢‚Ǩ¬?s and they said the notification came through work. I highly suggest stocking up on winter gear and make sure your gear has the -25 statement on it to keep you warm. Boots, snow pants, long socks and long johns are great items. We moved here in January and the day we flew in it was 10 degree?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s! We came from Hawaii, Hickam AFB, and just about freaked. Thankfully, we found tons of things to do with our twins and older daughter. There is tons of shopping and great places to eat. the sites here are beautiful!!!!!!!!!!!!! One of the most beautiful places I have ever been to, but the cold is definitely rough getting use to and I grew up in snow.?¢‚Ǩ¬ù

?¢‚Ǩ‚Äú?¢‚Ǩ¬ùif you?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢re coming to AK during the winter months (Sept-Apr) then you will need a winter coat for sure and some warm clothes, boots to get you started.I?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢m not sure how many bags we were able to bring with us but i do remember having to pay for some of our bags.?¢‚Ǩ¬ù

?¢‚Ǩ‚Äú?¢‚Ǩ¬ùhe baggage is the same as if you were traveling and poundage I believe is also the same. The only one that gets extra is the military member.. I would double check with the command and travel.. Yes we came from CA also and you will need boots, coats, hats and gloves it is very cold in the 20?¢‚Ǩ¬?s & 30?¢‚Ǩ¬?s. ?¢‚Ǩ¬ù

?¢‚Ǩ‚Äú?¢‚Ǩ¬ùWe got to bring extra baggage for EACH person. I flew here (AK) with my three children, and brought 12 bags. We weren?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t charge for any of them, and all I had to do was show my husbands orders. ?¢‚Ǩ¬ù

I PCS?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢d to Fort Richardson 10 days ago. Post is small and easy to get around but lodging is horrible. We will have to move againg on Friday to a different room because lodging can?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t extend our stay in our current room. This will be our 3rd time moving since we got here.We have lodging until the 2nd of Nov. and we dont get our house until the 2nd week of November so i am pretty bummed out. No transportation for people who get here without their POV so we have been walking everywhere. Other than that Fort Richardson is nice.
